Tereos Starch & Sweeteners aims to combine high-performance production with the protection of the environment. For all its activities, Tereos Starch & Sweeteners always seeks to use renewable natural resources efficiently. Thus, the company is committed to contributing towards the development of environmentally friendly production methods and products. Tereos Starch & Sweeteners tries its best to promote sustainable development internally and encourages its suppliers to produce goods or services that are environmentally friendly. Compliance with all applicable statutory requirements, the continuous efforts to prevent pollution, and the improvement of the environmental performance are part of our daily mission.

In 2001 Tereos Starch & Sweeteners participated in an Eco-profile study published at AAF-level (European Starch Industry Association). Since this study, Tereos Starch & Sweeteners has significantly improved energy and water consumptions (respectively 20% and 10% reduction for the past 10 years) and all the urban production sites of Tereos Starch & Sweeteners are ISO 14000 certified.

In 2011 a Life Cycle Assessment study (LCA) was launched at the AAF-level from the cultivation of wheat/maize until the final product at the Tereos Starch & Sweeteners plant gate. The following impact categories have been assessed: global warming, water depletion, acidification, ozone layer depletion, eutrophication and land use.

In the framework of its environment-friendly programme, Tereos Starch & Sweeteners aims to:

  • comply with statutory requirements and granted authorisations.
  • reduce its consumption of energy, water and chemical products, the nuisance caused by its activity (noise, smell, particles) and its quantities of liquid and solid wastes.
  • control our current operation through appropriate operating procedures and optimisation of processes according to the IPPC-directive (Integrated Prevention Pollution Control).
  • assess the environmental impact of new projects and/or main process modifications.
  • maintain constructive relationships with regulatory authorities, relevant local bodies and neighbours.
  • develop contingency plans and procedures for incidents, emergencies and disaster relief.
  • consider the environmental probity of suppliers.
