The Innovation process

Tereos Starch & Sweeteners ensures that Innovation works for customers in a reactive and proactive way and that the company’s products continuously fit ever-changing market needs.

  • The New Product and Process Development team (NPD), together with the Application team, develops and evaluates new products and applications answering market needs.
  • They work on daily optimisation and ensure that the company remains at the highest level of knowledge and know-how in its fields of expertise to ensure future competitiveness.
  • Tereos Starch & Sweeteners field teams of Customer Technical Support are backed up by the NPD and Application teams to guarantee that the company addresses all individual customer's needs.
  • Operational teams are supported by experts in charge of scientific affairs, regulations and compliance, as well as intellectual property.

New Product Development (NPD)

The research centre (surface area of 1700 m²) is segmented into functional zones with modular processing units, capable of running a downsized plant equivalent to virtually any processing step, and producing pilot quantities of products that can be tested in the Application Centre. For all key technologies (milling, blending, separating, drying, cooking, transforming, reacting, crystallizing, fermenting...) different modules are available to enable a fact-based process design.

The role of the NPD team is to develop new products and processes, while improving current ones. As a centre of expertise, it supports engineering and production to strive for continuous improvement. Tereos Starch & Sweeteners accomplishes this mission by providing, using and building strong expertise in key technologies, and supporting analytics with a team of experts and state-of-the-art analytical and pilot laboratories. Tereos Starch & Sweeteners's expertise includes cereal constituents’ separation, starch and protein extraction and modification, enzymatic and chemical catalysis, refinement, crystallisation, spray-drying and fermentation.

Application Centre

The Application Centre regroups all competences and tools necessary to evaluate new products, identify and develop application opportunities aligned with consumers and customers’ needs and support customers for optimal application.

A building of 1,400m² in Marckolsheim (France) has been specifically designed to work for and with customers. The centre includes a pilot hall, for applications related to food, oral care and cosmetics, meat, bakery laboratory and tableting laboratories, paper/board applications facilities, analytical laboratories with state-of-the-art equipment (chromatography, rheology, particle size analysis, hygroscopicity and accelerated ageing), a sensory evaluation laboratory and a panel of trained experts.

Customer Technical Support

Tereos Starch & Sweeteners's Customer Technical Support, close to customers’ international teams, is committed to provide customers with accurate, timely, cost-effective and optimal solutions. Technical support engineers and technicians are based regionally and close to customers to serve them on their industrial sites.

  • Support implementation of products by technical advice and analytical expertise.
  • Present new products and new applications/concepts and deliver technical trainings on Tereos Starch & Sweeteners's product portfolio.
  • Primary contact to customer R&D and coordination of collaboration projects with technical teams.

Scientific & Regulatory Affairs

The Scientific & Regulatory Affairs team brings together expertise from nutritional science, pharmaceuticals, regulatory affairs and intellectual property. Formed by PhDs, engineers and pharmacists with scientific backgrounds, the team is supported by external scientific and regulatory affairs partners on a global stage. The team conveys the latest scientific findings in product ideas that contribute to nutritional improvements.

The team contributes to nutritional research and peer-reviewed articles, position papers on nutrition and regulatory affairs, international conferences, regulatory dossiers for product approvals and patent submissions.

Applications for the future

The objective of Tereos Starch & Sweeteners in the field of Green Chemistry is to substitute petrochemical building blocks or energy valorisation with structural or functional equivalents with an agricultural origin. Through its agricultural shareholding, Tereos Starch & Sweeteners has a strong position in terms of growing and sourcing biomass. In addition to its wide industrial deployment, the strength of the Tereos group’s sister companies (sugar beet and sugar cane) and to its technological know-hows in terms of biotechnology and chemistry, make Tereos Starch & Sweeteners a core partner in the development of the new bio-economy.
