Raw materials

Tereos Starch & Sweeteners’s requirements in terms of agricultural raw materials

The high concentration of starch, protein content and characteristics, the level of impurities, and moisture content are some of the primary factors in the productivity of starch plants. The specifications of cereals which are bought by Tereos Starch & Sweeteners also take into account the European regulation requirements, particularly  pesticides, mycotoxins and GMO-free certification for maize. Goods are subject to a rigorous sampling and analysis procedure before being loaded and delivered to plants. Moreover, Tereos Starch & Sweeteners ensures the traceability of its raw materials from storage and shipment silos to the delivery of the customer.

Co-operating with cereal and starch potato producers

Tereos Starch & Sweeteners has built privileged and long-term relationships with cereal and starch potato producers to improve the quality of its raw materials and secure its supplies.
Seed selection, cultivation techniques and process and storage conditions contribute in making these agricultural raw materials into products that are perfectly suitable for industrial use. Thanks to this privileged partnership, we can adapt to the continuous changes of regulation and to new market requirements. In the bioethanol sector for example, sustainable agriculture which respects the environment requires close and rigorous co-operation with cereal producers.

Supplying, a major strategic issue

The cereals and starch potatoes which are processed by Tereos Starch & Sweeteners are usually grown in close proximity of plants: more than 75% are loaded within a radius of less than 150km. Grain crops are harvested once a year whereas plants process cereals on a daily basis and starch potatoes during the campaign period in order to continuously supply customers. Trucks and barges handle local supplies while trains are used for the farthest departure points. Tereos Starch & Sweeteners' goal is to optimise the logistics for each production site so that we can have a better control of delivery times and transportation costs (major competitiveness driver) and preserve the environment, particular attention paid to the production of greenhouse gases.
